Sound familiar? Yeah, we've all been there.
It seems to me that nowadays, "date night" has all of these connotations of flowers, expensive dinners and heels. I hate wearing heels.
I think it's time for that to change. Those of us with long term boyfriends and short term finances deserve a date night too.
I have put together a few ideas for an easy, inexpensive night out for you and the boy toy. Heels optional.
Some of my favorite dates have been some of the cheesiest that I have been on. In every area there are "tourist" things that can actually prove to be a lot of fun! For Valentine's Day last year I got EJ tickets to the local aquarium. We spent the day wandering around looking at the fish and squealing over how cute the baby otters were (maybe that part was just me...).
Food Network Night
Pretend you're Rachael Ray (because she is fabulous), and have your boyfriend yell "Bam!" a lot.
But actually though, cooking together can be a lot of fun and is a lot more intimate than a waiter stopping by every 15 minutes! I love picking out a "project meal" and tackling it together. Whether it's a fancy entree or delicious dessert, you'll feel totally accomplished (and full!) when you're done.
Local Music or Festivals
There are free opportunities everywhere, you just have to look for them! Check the local paper or just start talking to people. For instance, here in Winston-Salem, they shut down a street downtown for live music every Saturday night. There are also quite a few music venues that feature live bands free of charge or for a very small cover fee. Smaller towns often have local food or art festivals that can be a lot of fun! A quick google search will often yield results for easy scheduling or you can just start exploring!
Find the Specials
EJ and I keep joking that we need to make a schedule of happy hours and food specials around town. A $2 Taco Tuesday or $3 Pint Night makes for a cheap, easy night out without the pressure or expense of a fancy dinner. Keep notes on what your favorite restaurants and bars have to offer!
