Darn it Peek. Stop tying to steal my caffeine.
I move to the desk across the room. The chair isn't comfortable and there is absolutely zero creative flow. Ugh.
I have never been one of those people who can work anywhere. Sleep anywhere, yes, (that's a whole 'nother story), but I do my best work in very specific locations. Whether I'm working on schoolwork, blog stuff, or social media for my part-time, I like to be curled up in a chair or love seat, preferably with a blanket, with a small table to hold my office supplies and coffee. I've tried for years to work at a desk, but always end up throwing ergonomics to the wind...I like typing in my lap.
Of course, everyone's idea of perfection is different. If you're a fan of a big corner desk with six drawers? More power to ya. You're probably much more ready for a grown up job than I am. If I want a recliner and big window in the real world, I'll probably have to be a CEO. That's an entry level position, right?
Annnyway. In crafting my perfect workspace (and creeping on other people's), I have noticed a few key elements that every space should have. How you incorporate them is up to you.
No matter what your preference, make sure you are in love with your chair because chances are, you're probably going to be spending quite a bit of time there. If it hurts your back or restricts your natural posture in any way (unless that's the point) then maybe it's time to invest in a better option.
Storage and Surface Space
Who am I kidding. I'm so not ready for my thesis.
*grabs purse and sprints out the door to Homegoods*
Since so much of my schoolwork is reading, I am not a huge fan of overhead lights. Sure they're the easy option, but if you've gotten this far into this post, you know I'm not exactly going for simple here.
If you can, I totally suggest setting up your work space next to a window. Natural lighting is far less harsh and it saves on electricity! For later in the evening (or those dreaded early mornings), lamps are a great way to create soft light.
I like a little sound while I'm working, but alas, I am easily distracted by the TV, the cats, or EJ. I have chosen to seclude myself, but armed with portable speakers for my Vitamin String Quartet Pandora. It's the bomb.com for hammering out afternoon papers!
Bonus: Proximity to a Coffee Pot
