Fast forward four years and those same goodbyes are happening all over again. The people who have been your partners in crime for the past four years are moving all over the country...and this time you don't even have winter break to look forward to as a reunion. And the real world? Well it's not as full of forced bonding as your college campus was.
Making friends is hard.
Luckily, we are here to help (you're welcome). Whether you're in a new job or grad school, get off your couch, take off the sweatpants and close Netflix. It's time to make some friends.
How do I meet them?!
The beautiful thing about post-grads is that everyone is in the same boat! The new guy at the cubicle next to yours doesn't know anyone either. Take it back to pre-school and just introduce yourself. If you are just starting grad school, meet and greet events are an easy way to meet students both in and outside of your program. Class isn't super conducive to friendly chatting, but hanging out in the library after definitely is! In either situation, you can get really comfortable just going to school or work, taking care of business, and heading right home afterward to snuggle with your cat. Don't be that guy.
What do I do with them?!
No frat parties. No dining hall. And are sleepovers still an okay thing?
Welcome to the real world where cocktails, tapas, and dinner parties have replaced keg stands and 3 AM Subway. Last weekend, EJ suggested that we have one of my new friends and her boyfriend over for dinner. We cooked dinner, they brought wine and beer, and it was one of the best evenings I've had in a while! Just talking and laughing about crazy neighbors, our families, apartment decoration...so much fun! We even talked about planning a board game night sometime soon! An evening out with friends doesn't have to always be crazy or expensive. Especially with new friends, just getting to know each other better is a great way to spend a Friday night.
But what if they don't like me?!
This is adulthood and ain't nobody got time for haters (just ask T-Swift). The beauty of the real world is you aren't forced into social circles with people you don't like. If that guy in the cubicle I mentioned ends up being a dick, then just move on to the next cubicle. This is your life now and it only has to be filled with people who make you happy!
