about to-be grad, or even just thinking about switching careers, you HAVE to check this out!
It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year after graduation, and that Leah and I are on our way to some awesome careers. We were both fortunate enough to graduate with plans in place, in cities we were excited to live in. Honestly, we didn’t realize how fortunate we are. Scary statistic time: Over half of recent graduates do not have full-time employment.
According to Robert Meier, the President of Job Market Experts, a job listing attracts over 200 applicants on average. Of those 200 people, approximately 2% will be offered an interview. And to make things worse? 50% of all available jobs aren’t even posted online*.
It’s like the job market Hunger Games out there, y’all.
Still in college? You’re in luck. Be sure to get yourself an internship as soon as possible. There are a ton of paid and unpaid internships out there. Looking for a marketing internship? Think past marketing firms and big companies, local businesses could use your skills, and you may actually get more experience out of a smaller company than a larger intern program! Another great way to get some experience is a virtual internship during your school year – these come in all forms, shapes, and sizes, and can help you break into careers like PR, marketing, and journalism.
2. Network, Network, Network
Talk to everyone you know. Whether it’s a family friend, a professor, or even your parents, they may be able to connect you to someone who can help you find a job (especially the jobs that never make it on to the internet). The key to networking is to always ask if they know someone else you could talk to about *fill in the blank industry.* Bonus: Networking can help you skip some of the stress of the interview process, because you’ve already spoken with someone who can recommend you for the job!
3. Brand of You with Fifth Third Bank and NextJob
Luckily, Fifth Third Bank and NextJob are here to help. NextJob offers professional job coaching to help you land your next position in a field you love.
