Between my boyfriend, my guy friends, and now Leah (you brewery working traitor, you), I have heard the above statement more times than I can count. Give me a fruity cocktail or a glass of white wine any day, but beer has always been something I have shied away from. The problem is, they're right. Beer is easier. Thus began my tasting spree.
Now, while I may still think hops are the devil, I will admit that there are a few beers that I have come across that pair nicely with a frosted glass. I think these are a couple that even the girliest of drinkers will approve of.
I have been known to complain that even Blue Moon is too heavy, but this Belgian style witbeir is about as light as you can get. Slightly fruity with a clean finish makes it an easy starter for someone used to wine.
Side note...I only just figured out that its not a "wheat beer." Oops.
Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager (New Orleans, LA)
I used to serve this Louisiana summer brew during my waitressing years and it was always a crowd favorite. Now I know why. Abita adds in fresh strawberry juice after brewing, giving this beer a slight sweetness to it, perfect for the summertime.
Terrapin Maggie's Farmhouse (Athens, GA)
Leah came to visit after her first week in Athens with a six pack of Maggie's and a mission - to make me like beer. Another summer brew, Maggie's is brewed with fresh Georgia peaches. The Southern girl in me just couldn't say no.
Yes, Leah. You succeeded.
When in Doubt, Go Cider
Still not feeling the beer? A lot of bars and restaurants are starting to carry more ciders and many even have them on tap. Ciders tend to be much sweeter and are an easy transition from a cocktail or wine. Two of my favorites are Angry Orchard Crisp Apple Cider and Fox Barrel (Soon to be Crispin) Pacific Pear Cider.
Drink away, darlings.
